“EXOSSI: From studio to shows”

As Houston’s underground rock scene continues to thrive, one band that’s caught our attention is EXOSSI. What began as a solo project has since evolved into a full-fledged band, carving out its own unique space in the city’s vibrant music scene.

the band consists of Dennis (vocalist), Iran (lead guitar), Aidan (rhythm guitar), Ayla (bass), and Julian (drums). Throughout their journey, EXOSSI has explored a diverse range of genres, but their sound has recently evolved to focus more on shoegaze and alternative rock.

When it comes to writing music, the band has a relaxed yet effective approach. As mochi explains ““As a band, I’d say we kinda just spitball guitar riffs around and then build off each other’s parts until we have a finished product. Sometimes one of our members will come with a complete song structure to which we just flesh it out until satisfied !

Occasionally we (primarily me) butt heads with each other on how we think the songs should be written, but I think it keeps the music fresh.”Dennis, the band’s frontman, adds,“the process is a very interesting process to be honest, we jam together first and then we sit on that song for 2-3 weeks and then after playing it live twice we finally realize we need to record a song and have a proper structure so we don’t improvise every-time ( even though we improvise and still sound great ) but its usually all of us kinda forming a idea with lead guitarist and my drummer and then the rest of the band goes along and figures it out in the span of 20-40 minutes”

With a unique process of making music they also have to find balance with in one another with having as many personalities in their group. Despite the occasional clash of creative opinions , the band,s respect for each other and the love of their music helps keep the music-making process flow.

Drummer Moochie reflects on the group dynamic “ In some way or another, we all kinda knew each other before we even joined the band, so the dynamic we shared fit kinda seamlessly in the context of a musical project. We’re still learning more about each other every day, but I’d say we all have a good idea of who we are as people, how we interact with each other, and how not to step on anyone’s toes so to speak. There’s a lot of love and respect within our circle, and I’m grateful for it !”

What started as a one-man project has now blossomed into a full band, and I asked Dennis, the frontman known as EXOSSI, how he chose each member. He shared that, over the years in the Houston music scene, he met some of the band members and was immediately impressed by their talent, which led him to bring them on board. For others, he had already known them and felt they would be a perfect fit for his vision.

As some of the band members jokingly put it, “EXOSSI kidnapped us!” But regardless of their different backgrounds and individual talents, it’s clear that their shared love for music and similar tastes have created a solid and harmonious balance within the group. Their chemistry on stage and in the studio speaks for itself.

Despite the success EXOSSI has achieved, the road hasn’t always been smooth. Like many bands, they’ve faced setbacks such as missed flights, struggles with booking shows, transportation issues, and tight budgets. Yet, through all the challenges, they’ve never failed to deliver an unforgettable experience for their fans, always bringing the music and the energy.

When asked about their favorite venues, the band was quick to highlight some memorable spots. “For sure, Rubber Gloves in Denton is one of my favorite venues,” says Dennis. Moochie agrees, adding, “Radio/East in Austin or Rubber Gloves in Denton! Both are super cool spots to hang out and they both have amazing sound’ and Iran chimes in with his picks: “Paper Tiger, downtown Phoenix, and White Oak are definitely some of my favorites.”

One of the band’s favorite aspects of being a group is the interactions with their fans. For EXOSSI, it’s not just about playing music—it’s about creating connections and building a community. Whether it’s talking to fans after a show, receiving feedback, or seeing people bond over their music, these moments are what truly make the journey rewarding. The support and energy from their audience continue to inspire the band and fuel their passion for creating music.Aiden says “My favorite part is being able to do what I’m passionate about which is making and creating music. And to be able to do that with my best friends is what makes 10x better. And also to be able to travel with the band and see places and do things we normally don’t get to do here in Houston.’ Exo adds “travel and see new places and meet new people along the way! i also enjoy spending time with my bandmates because its just traveling with your best friends to a new place.”

From the studio to shows and the interactions from fans , the challenges of being part of a growing underground scene, EXOSSI is grateful for the opportunities to create music and connect with fans. For Moochie, the ultimate reward is seeing people bond over their music: “If two friends, a group of friends, or even strangers can come together because of our music, then I’m content.”

We’re thrilled to feature EXOSSI on our website and help amplify their unique sound and message to both our fans and theirs. It’s been exciting to watch their journey from a solo project to a full-fledged band, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for them. We wish them continued success and look forward to supporting their music as they continue to grow and make their mark on the scene. Keep rocking, EXOSSI!
